The Commonwealth Games Council for Wales (CGCW) today announced the line-up for the Isle of Man 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games (7-13 September).

A squad of 32 athletes across six sports will be travelling to the island to compete for Wales in the fourth competition of its kind, including the newly crowned European Junior Swimming Champion Ieuan Lloyd from Penarth.

The Commonwealth Games for the next generation of sporting stars, the Youth Games will give potential Glasgow 2014 medallists a taste of a multi-sport event and the chance to put their names firmly on the sporting map for the future.

 Georgia Davies in Delhi 2010

Four years ago at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, Wales came home with 16 medals, five gold, five silver and six bronze and stars such as Delhi 2010 medallists Jazz Carlin, Jemma Lowe and Georgia Davies were born. Team Wales will be hoping for the next crop of medallists to emerge from the Isle of Man.

Team Wales Chef de Mission, Chris Jenkins, explains:

“We’re really excited about the squad of athletes that will be representing Team Wales in the Isle of Man. All of our medallists from the pool in Delhi 2010 had their first taste of the Commonwealth podium at the Pune 2008 Youth Games so it just goes to show how vital the experience of a major Games can be in their development.

“Glasgow 2014 is already firmly on our radar and this Youth Games will provide the athletes with a stepping stone in their preparation for those Games in just over three years time.”
